Name that author!

Anyone up for a game? solosundance, moonlightmead and I were talking and thought it would be fun to suggest a game. The basic principle is that people submit a short piece of writing and then others identify the author.

Interested?  Read on!

The way it would work is that an author would send in a short piece of writing.  (We thought something up to 300 words or so)

The organiser would anonymise it and post all the submissions.  Each passage would have all the authors' names available so that people can vote for which author they think wrote which piece.  Voting would be anonymous until closed.

We’d all have a week to consider, and then there would be the big reveal!

Other things we thought about:

  • It’s not about critiquing someone’s style:  instead, it’s about seeing if we can identify an author’s style from what they’ve written

  • Although obviously people can write something very different from their normal style, we're particularly hoping for things people wrote while not trying to be different from usual

  • Similarly, it’s not about commenting on the content of the piece (although this could come later)

  • Some people have a very distinctive style and some don’t.  There are no right or wrong ‘answers’ – it’s a game!

  • You can send in a WIP or part of a WIP

  • If you don't have a WIP or don't want to use it because you might need it for a future challenge (e.g. Pros Big Bang), feel free to write something

  • Please note that anyone is allowed to vote, but if you send in a piece for inclusion then please vote as well

  • The first round would be just for authors but if there’s interest then we can try this for artists and vidders as well.

What we need to know is whether enough people are interested in submitting a piece of writing.  We’d also need a volunteer to run it who doesn’t want to submit their writing and who can create polls.

So to make things easier to see, here’s a poll:

Poll #1997135 Name that author!

D'ya wanna play?

Interesting, but I wouldn’t write or vote
3(11.5%)
I’d vote, but wouldn’t submit anything written
9(34.6%)
Yes, I’d write and vote
14(53.8%)
I’d be willing to organise it
0(0.0%)

So what do you think?  Please vote and comment so we can see if we need to get busy.  Oh, and if there are things I've forgotten to add, fellow conspirators, or if you have questions, please go ahead!

I'd play. Although it would depend on the deadline for the 300 words. Given that I don't have 300 words...

ETA: I also think I'd be one of the easier ones to guess. I am all too aware of my foibles!*g*

Yay! I'd play too, and I'm fairly sure that the things I've been beaten (or beta-en *g*) over the head about might give me away, but perhaps not, you never know!

I see five takers (including me - just voted) already - excellent.

Also, must think of a tag for it - have stuck it under fanfiction: challenges for now. But if there are takers for non-fic rounds, might have a rethink on that.

Well, I haven't read that much so I couldn't vote, and I don't think I'd submit anything because I don't think anyone would know my style. However, it's a really awesome idea and I'd happily cheerlead! :)

I think this would be an interesting game--I know in the past, in another fandom, I found I got to know some authors' writing styles well, and could fairly accurately predict who wrote what. But I don't know the authors here as well. So, I'd be intrigued to see the results.

I'd probably be able to write 300 word--lol

Great! I think there are people who have quite a distinctive style but then again if I had ten paragraphs to choose from I might not be able to assign them all, so it will be interesting to see what they all come out like. It should be fun!

Bit of Fun

I have a hard drive groaning under the weight of WIP. My fault, I write chaotically. I've never posted anything that wasn't complete, so that would be new.
Sounds fun; the only thing I can guarantee is that any guesses I make will be exactly that and I'd be very surprised if I've written enough to be identifiable myself.
Oh and I've never posted anything anywhere but FF & AO3, so bound to get that wrong too. So I give you my omnishambles and very welcome you are too.

Excellent! I am sure there will be huge amounts of guessing involved on all sides, too.

You shouldn't need to worry about posting anywhere. I think our plan is that we find someone willing to run the thing (*eyes poll results worriedly*) and then people send their pieces to that person, and then that person does the posting.

I'd write something, hopefully. However, since I've read passages before that I'd written and didn't remember writing, I'm sure I'm at guessing. But hey, I'm in.

Great! I have to confess, I found something on my hard drive the other day and had to check the properties to see if I had really written it, because I had no recollection of it whatsoever! So if I can't even recognise my own style, there is no hope for me at all. But I'm in too!

This sounds very interesting! I don't think I can contribute as a writer at least for a month due to something I have to get done first! (You know that already...) even if I want to try! And it will be a great challenge because I can't write stories without beta for checking even very basic things like grammars, lines, etc, etc.

Very interested in artist version of this game but you can guess very easily it's my art by a first look! I need to apply different approach for this ;-)

Yes - exams come first! *g* But it would be great if you could play too, whether as a writer or as an artist :) Hopefully there will be more than one round of this so there will be time to do other things as well.

We’d also need a volunteer to run it who doesn’t want to submit their writing and who can create polls.
Surely you just need a volunteer to run the thing who can create polls, and wouldn't enter themselves to vote, because they'd know who'd written what? It wouldn't matter if they submitted writing themselves as long as they didn't give away the answers. In which case the three of you would be able to run it after all - maybe take it in turns, if there was more than one game, so you all get a go at voting too...

Yes - but as it started as a conversation about 'can we tell the difference', I think we are all keen to have a go.

...although it is looking like there is a lot of interest, so perhaps we could try rounds.

I'd be completely rubbish at guessing who's who with something like this, but it will be fun trying to sort them out. :D

It all started as a discussion on whether we thought we could do it, and we generally thought there might be one or two author we had a good chance of spotting, and then others it would be harder for. For some authors, perhaps choice of theme, or length/brevity of the piece would be the best clue, and we can't really accommodate that, but we thought we could give it a go on the basis of style.

So yeah, it should be fun!

Oy, almost forgot to actually vote! Okay, now done.

This sounds like fun! And I'd love to contribute (although most of the plot bunnies currently are "potential future BB") though that's contingent on what's going on in RL.

But, ooooh! Sounds like a lot of fun. :-)

It occurred to me last night that this would be fun if we were all working to the same prompt, too. You'd really see the differences... But I do see how that would likely complicate things!

Good idea... but perhaps for another round, because if people want to submit WIPs this time then they might not have something on that prompt. That's assuming this all works and people want to play again *g*

*waves* Hello from a new-ish member here, though I met some of you at the CI5mas in Hornsey last November :)
I haven't read enough Pros fic to be able to make educated guesses, but I'd like to play along all the same. It sounds like a great idea.
